Day 1 - The South Coast and Myrdalsjokull Glacier
Our route takes us via the greenhouse town of Hveragerdi to the Atlantic Ocean and vast panoramic views of the ever-changing glacier flood plains which merge with the dramatic black beaches of Iceland’s south coast. We then drive inland to two waterfalls: the graceful Seljalandsfoss, where the sure-footed can walk behind the cascade, and the impressive Skogafoss. Skogafoss carries water from two powerful glaciers, Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull which dominate the slopes of the active volcano Katla.
Weather and road conditions permitting, you will also have the opportunity to experience snowmobiling, dog-sledding, a guided glacial hike or riding Icelandic horses. These activities are not included in the tour price. We arrive at your hotel in time for dinner.
Day 2 - Landmannalaugar and Mount Hekla
Hrauneyjar lies at the the centre of the forbidding Highlands and our route takes us first through the Thjorsardalur Valley stopping at Hjalparfoss, one of Iceland’s loveliest waterfalls, before continuing into the extraordinary mountain landscape to the water-filled Ljotipollur crater and the hot springs of the Landmannalaugar oasis.
This is your opportunity to bathe in the natural hot spring waters or join a short guided hike before heading for Mt Hekla, the queen of Icelandic volcanoes.
Weather and road conditions permitting, we will drive to a height of 950 metres up the side of the volcano to capture the astounding views.
We arrive at your hotel in time for dinner.
Day 3 - The Golden Circle & Langjokull Glacier
This classic tour begins from the South Coast, towards the thundering rainbow-ringed Gullfoss, the Golden waterfall. From Gullfoss we drive to the mighty Langjokull glacier where we also have the option of snowmobiling, river-rafting or quad-biking. Please note that these activities are not included in the tour price.
We drive into the geothermal landscape around iconic Geysir with the erupting hot springs. Onwards, to serene Lake Laugarvatn and to Thingvellir, our National Park and the site of the world’s oldest parliament.
Þingvellir National Park is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The entrance to Thingvellir is a walk through the Almannagja gorge, which shows visible evidence of plate tectonic activity. Tectonic plate boundaries separating the North American and the Eurasian plates can clearly be seen on the surface of the Thingvellir rift valley. Almannagja at Thingvellir is considered to be one of the best examples of plate tectonics.
Return to Reykjavik in time for dinner. Depending on the season and weather there is a chance you might see the Midnight Sun or the Northern Lights.
Please note: Depending on weather conditions this tour may operate in reverse, beginning with the Golden Circle and ending with the South Coast.
