Tour description

On this tour we explore the history, cultural heritage and natural environment of the picturesque coastal town of Isafjordur, nestled between the majestic, glacially carved mountain ridges of Iceland's Westfjords.

Your guide, dressed in 19th century period costume, takes you on a tour through this unique town and up to the slopes above Isafjordur. Along the way, you visit the various historical houses and trade centres, which still reflect Isafjordur's glory days as a major Icelandic seafaring and fishing port. You will hear a lot of stories and folk tales about the people who lived here in the past; about their lives and their common beliefs. You will also visit the authentic settings where the events described in the stories have taken place.

Isafjordur was granted municipal status already in 1786, but it was the later part of the 19th century and early 20th century that saw the town truly flourish. Today, Isafjordur is known for its urban atmosphere and cultural and artistic diversity, but the remarkably well-preserved city centre, dating from the 19th century, maintains an earlier ambience of a bustling fishing harbour and still resonates with the stories and legends of old.

At the end of your walk, surrounded by spectacular pristine nature, you will gain an insight into Icelandic flora and see native plants in their natural habitat. What's more, you will be given a glimpse into the geological past of the Westfjords, while you admire the breathtaking view of the fjord and the surrounding valleys.

Visiting Isafjordur in winter is also a special experience, when the snow-covered landscape and the mysterious winter sky create an atmosphere of pure magic!
