Tour description

The village of Hesteyri, located in one of the Glacier fjords, can only to be reached by boat, and the boat ride from Isafjordur takes about 70 minutes. On your voyage, you'll experience the glorious views of snow speckled table mountains and secluded coves.

A guided walk through Hesteyri will give you an insight into the history of this old fishing village, and shed light on what it might have been like to live there, almost on the edge of the earth, without electricity and roads, during the last century. In the late 1940s, the people of Hesteyri made a joint decision to move away, and in 1952 the village stood totally abandoned.

These days, however, Hesteyri is the most popular place for visitors to start their hiking trips through the Hornstrandir nature reserve, or just enjoy the pure, colourful environment and a sense of tranquillity. The walk ends in the old Doctor´s house, built in 1901, where you´ll be served traditional Icelandic refreshments. On the way back to Isafjordur, there is a chance you might see arctic foxes, seals and whales.
