Iceland´s new president

16. ágúst 2016
Guðni Th. Jóhannesson

Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, a historian, clinched a majority victory over other establishment candidates by winning 39.1% of the country's vote in June 2016.  Guðni was a favorite in polls even though he had not decided to run for office.  There was a pressure from the vast majority of the Icelandic people to elect a president with no or little political background after having Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson as head of state for 20 years.  Guðni is set to change the role of the President and move it forward to the 21st century.  He started off by speaking at the Icelandic Gay Pride festival in Iceland and by that becoming the first head of state to show his support to the cause.  Well done Guðni!
