Tour description

The rugged nature of green valleys, steep mountains, clear creeks and wild rivers makes Thorsmork one of Iceland’s most popular hiking grounds and a favourite place for many Icelanders. It’s only about 160 km east of Reykjavik but the last 30 km is one of the greatest strips of mountain track you encounter - with unbridged glacial rivers and streams to cross in our strong and reliable Super Jeeps. It’s a great 4x4 track and a lot of fun.

The first stop of the day is at one of Iceland’s loveliest waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss. Here the sure-footed can walk behind the thundering cascade but be careful as the trails is narrow and a bit slippery.  Extra caution is especially needed during the winter and good footwear is recommended. This is one of the most photographed places in Iceland and for good reason. During the winter, the waterfall is lit up so you can enjoy it’s magic all year round. Then it’s on to a spectacular hidden canyon rich with unique flora, green moss and a beautiful waterfall. Depending on conditions, we will either be making a stop at Gljúfrabúi or Nauthúsagil.

Now it’s time for more action as we head to Gigjökull glacier tongue. The driver will deflate the tires for some serious jeep action, including splashing through glacier rivers, so fasten your seatbelts and keep your windows closed and experience the fun!

Before we leave for the black sands we enjoy a light lunch that’s included in the tour price. This is a good opportunity to try the Icelandic meat soup made with lamb, rice and vegetables. This traditional soup is a hearty and popular meal that’s kept Icelanders warm and energetic through the centuries when food was scarce.

After lunch, the tour takes you for a fun action drive to the black volcano beaches of the south, where you have panoramic views in all directions with the Atlantic Ocean beating the shore on one side and glaciers and volcanos on the other.

Our last stop of the day is one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland, the impressive Skógafoss. It brings water from the 2 glaciers surrounding it, Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull.  Due to the amount of spray rainbows are usually visible on sunny days but the spray means you’re likely to get wet if you get up close. But you should definitely take the extra steps as it’s quite empowering standing close to it. The Skógafoss area is also the starting point for those that wish to hike over Fimmvörðuháls over to Þórsmörk, one of the most popular hiking routes in Iceland.
