Tour Description

Driving from Reykjavík, we go through the lava fields in Hellisheiði to the Lava Tunnel. The lava tunnel is one of the biggest in Iceland, was formed over 5000 years ago and gets up to 30 metres wide and 10 metres high. Due to the different oxidisation of the various types of minerals in the lava, the walls are spectacularly colourful.

After an hour-long guided tour in the cave, we will go to Hveragerði to visit the Skyr Factory. There we will get an introduction on the history and how Icelanders manufactured Skyr. We will also get to taste the one and only brand-new TripAdvisor Skyr drink.

When the visit is over, we will begin our hunt for the northern lights.

The lights are caused by cosmic rays, solar wind and magnetospheric plasma interacting with the upper atmosphere. Their charged particles, mainly electrons and protons, enter the atmosphere from above, causing ionisation and excitation of atmospheric constituents — generating the stunning light emissions we know as the Aurora Borealis. The experience of seeing these magnificent lights can be truly life-changing.

Please note that as the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, we cannot guarantee sightings.
